How to drive safely near large trucks in Tennessee

On Behalf of | Oct 3, 2017 | Firm News, trucking accidents |

The roads of Tennessee can be scary, especially for young drivers with little experience. However, even some of the most experienced drivers find themselves in difficult situations when on the roads throughout the state. Large trucks can be difficult to drive near due to their size and speed. Here are some tips to help you avoid trucking accidents.

When driving near a large truck, never tailgate the vehicle. It can be frustrating being stuck behind a truck because they take so long to get going due to their weight, but tailgating is dangerous. A rear-end collision with a truck can be tragic. It can crush you and your vehicle in an instant.

Blind spots are a big problem when driving around large trucks. These vehicles are so long that blind spots are on all four sides. Stay out of these areas as much as possible. How can you tell if you are in a truck’s blind spot? Look for the driver of the truck in the truck’s side mirror. If you cannot see the driver in the mirror, he or she likely cannot see you.

If you must pass a large truck, do so with care. Give yourself plenty of room to pass the truck so as it does not clip the rear of your vehicle. Be sure you can see the driver of the truck in your rear-view mirror prior to changing lanes. Speed up during the pass attempt so you can get as far from the truck as possible.
