What should I do with a drug that's been recalled?

Drug recalls are a part of life that are bound to happen. With so many different drugs on the market, it's likely that one of the drugs you take at some point in your life will be recalled. So, what do you do should one of your prescriptions get recalled? We will provide you with some instructions in today's post.

Prescription drugs can be recalled for various reasons. These include being labeled wrong, packaged incorrectly, are a hazard to the patient's health, is manufactured poorly, is possibly contaminated and is not what the description says it is.

Should the drug recall involve an over-the-counter drug, you should stop taking it the minute you find out about the recall. Since it is an over-the-counter drug, you can return it to the store where it was purchased. Ask the pharmacist at the store for alternatives to take as the recall is being handled.

If the drug that was recalled is a prescription drug, be sure to stop taking it the minute you hear of the recall. Call your doctor to find out what you should do next. He or she might want you to bring the drug to their office for proper disposal. Your doctor will then be able to write you a prescription for a replacement drug.

The most important thing to remember is to never continue taking a drug that has been recalled, even if it is an over-the-counter drug.
