Common surgical errors that can lead to medical malpractice

On Behalf of | Nov 14, 2017 | Firm News, medical malpractice |

Medical malpractice is an issue that is all too common these days. Even with today’s technology, doctors and nurses can still find themselves at the forefront of medical malpractice cases. One of the most common ways this happens is due to a surgical error. Today, we will discuss the most common types of surgical errors that can lead to medical malpractice cases.

Quite possibly one of the most common types of surgical errors is that of a foreign object being left in the body. Too many times, a surgeon will close up a patient only to have the patient get incredibly ill. The reason the patient has become ill is due to an item from the surgery being left in the body. Some items include cloths, tools and even a loose piece of the body that was removed.

Another common surgical error occurs when the surgeon winds up operating on the wrong part of the patient’s body. Even though many different medical professionals will ask the patient the location of the operation, it’s still possible for the wrong site to be operated on by the surgeon.

Errors with the anesthesia associated with the surgery are also considered surgical errors. This can be a deadly surgical error. If too much anesthesia is given, it can kill the patient. If too little is given, the patient could wake up in the middle of the surgery.

It’s also not out of the realm of possibilities that a surgeon operates on the wrong patient. This would mean that the surgeon and the medical staff did not conduct a proper preoperative verification of the person lying on the table.
