Safely sharing the road with trucks during the holidays

On Behalf of | Dec 9, 2018 | Firm News |

As the holidays near, there is a greater amount of traffic on the road, including trucks. Unfortunately, this increase can boost the chances of an auto incident.

Sharing the road with trucks can be a little unsettling, but keeping an eye out for certain hazards and signs can aid in keeping you safe. There are a few important hazards to always stay aware of.

Debris

Debris on the road or highway can create a dangerous situation for any vehicle, and this danger increases with the involvement of trucks. Sometimes, a trucker may try to avoid hitting debris, or she or he may not see the debris in time and accidentally hit it. In some instances, a truck carrying items with small or unsecured particles may create debris. If you notice debris in the road ahead, pay attention to the trucks and other vehicles around you that may try to avoid it. Make sure they do not hit you and you do not hit the debris either.

Spills and other road conditions

Spills, potholes and cracks can create dangerous conditions on the road. Particularly in the winter months, as black ice becomes more common, it is important to stay vigilant of any possible changes in the road. Similar to debris, you should watch out for truck drivers who may try to avoid them as you safely  around them yourself.

Drive defensively

It is no secret that a good number of trucking accidents occur due to drowsy or distracted driving. Therefore, as a responsible driver, it is important to not only think for yourself, but for other drivers around you. If the other motorist becomes distracted, you may still be able to avoid incidents by recognizing this and being proactive. Slow down and move away, if need be.

These are just a few common driving hazards to keep in mind. It is always a good practice to stay vigilant of your surroundings at all times and follow laws and traffic regulations.
